Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting Information

Most problems people encounter are due to the large variety of browsers (and versions of browsers) that are available. In order to make the site highly available to the public, we have designed the site with some older browsers (and older hardware) in mind. However, some necessary components (such as Javascript and frames) don’t work with older browsers.

Printing Problems

Schedule will not print

The most likely cause is that the frame you want to print is not in focus. Your browser will typically only print the frame that is in focus, even if there’s only one. Sometimes browsers indicate which frame is in focus with a black border, but this isn’t always the case.

To make a frame in focus, all you have to do is click somewhere in it with your mouse. So, to print a printable schedule, first try using the print button supplied on the page. If this doesn’t work (it won’t work with all browsers), click once on the schedule, then use your browser’s print command.

Schedule will not print legibly

Not all browsers print the same. We have tried to make the colour scheme compatible with all browsers and retain some of our colouring information (such as the different colours for express and regular routes), but it doesn’t always work. If you have a problem with printing, let us know and be prepared to tell us what browser you’re using.

Cannot print maps

It is challenging to provide maps that are detailed enough to show all the necessary information and are still manageable for home users in terms of size and memory.

For the sake of compatibility, the maps are currently in “GIF” (Graphics Interchange Format). These have low memory requirements but are not well suited to printing, especially at their current size. We also provide maps in “PDF” (Portable Document Format), which is readable by Adobe’s free Acrobat Viewer. These are conducive to printing (provided you have a reasonably high-resolution printer), but it will take a little longer to load the plug-in to view them.

Bookmarking Problems

Cannot bookmark a schedule page

This is a problem because different browsers handle bookmarking differently. Most will just bookmark the address in the location bar. Because our website uses frames, this doesn’t work as expected sometimes. If your browser has this problem (a bookmark you made for a schedule page takes you back to our homepage) then you can use the following workaround to bookmark a schedule page properly.

Go to the schedule page you want to bookmark as normal. Right-click (if you’re using a Macintosh, just hold down the mouse button for a while) the frame with the schedule in it and select “Add Bookmark”
for Netscape (doesn’t work in the Macintosh version of Netscape) or “Add to Favorites”
for Microsoft Internet Explorer. This should create a bookmark for the lower right frame of the schedule. The URL should end with bottom.html. Replace @bottom@with @main@and the entire schedule, with legends, will be bookmarked.

If you’re using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater, you don’t have to worry. If you just select “Add to Favorites”
in the Favorites menu, it will add the bookmark properly.

Information Update Problems

Information is not current

Browsers store pages you visit in memory that is local to your machine, called a cache. This is good as it makes your browsing faster, but sometimes your browser will show you the page from your cached copy when there is new information on the Transit website.

If you suspect the data you’re viewing is not up-to-date, click your browser’s “Reload”
button. You may have to hold the shift key down while you do this for it to work properly in some browsers.
