Who Can Use Handi-Transit?

Passengers must be an approved registrant to use Handi-Transit. You must submit an application and it must be approved by the Transit Department. You must meet one of the eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Requirements

1) Require the use of a wheelchair or scooter

  • On an ongoing basis – unlimited eligibility
  • Until a specific date – eligibility only until the date specified
  • As a result of dialysis treatment – eligibility only for trips to and from dialysis treatment

2) Unable to walk 175 metres (575 feet) outside unassisted

  • At all times – unlimited eligibility
  • During winter months only – eligibility restricted to the period from October 1st to March 31st
  • Until a specific date – eligibility only until the date specified
  • As a result of dialysis treatment – eligibility only for trips to and from dialysis treatment.

3) Legally blind

  • Visual impairment of 20 over 200 vision or less
  • Visual field of less than 20 degrees (legally blind)

Once eligibility is established, the passenger’s name and Handi-Transit registration number are added to Handi-Transit’s rider listing.

Passengers who are eligible for Handi-Transit Services on an unlimited eligibility basis are automatically eligible to use Winnipeg Transit’s fixed route services at no cost. They must show the Handi-Transit photo ID card to the driver to ride without paying.
