Attendant and Companion Policy

If a Handi-Transit passenger requires an attendant, it is that passenger’s responsibility to provide one.
Handi-Transit is not responsible for providing attendant service to passengers.

Handi-Transit passengers are allowed only one attendant to accompany them during transport. Attendants pay the regular Handi-Transit fare and must be booked at the same time the registered Handi-Transit passenger makes their trip booking.
Attendants / companions / children must be picked up and dropped off at the same location / address as the Handi-Transit passenger.
Passengers traveling with Handi-Transit require an attendant if the passenger:

  • Acts inappropriately and is disruptive to others
  • Exhibits behavior posing a risk and/or discomfort to others in the vehicle
  • Requires specialized consideration during transportation
  • Requires specific attention due to a medical condition
  • Cannot be left alone

Attendant: A person who travels with a Handi-Transit registrant to provide assistance during or after the trip.

  • The Handi-Transit registrant may require an attendant for every trip or only some trips.
  • We accommodate one attendant per trip (permanent or temporary).
  • Attendants must pay the Handi-Transit fare.
  • Attendants are required to comply with the same Handi-Transit policies as registered passengers.
  • Attendants MUST wear seat belts when traveling in Handi-Transit vehicles.

Companion: A person who travels with a Handi-Transit registrant for social reasons.

The Handi-Transit registrant is capable of taking the trip without the companion.

  • Companions may travel with a Handi-Transit registrant when there is room on the vehicle (determined once the schedule is produced – 2 pm the day prior to travel).
  • Companions must pay the Handi Transit fare.
  • Companions are required to comply with the same Handi-Transit policies as registered passengers.
  • Attendants MUST wear seat belts when traveling in Handi-Transit vehicles.

Child: A person less than 16 years of age

Children are welcome to travel with a Handi-Transit registrant when room is available

  • Children over six years of age must pay the Handi-Transit fare.
  • An appropriate car seat/booster seat for small children must be provided and secured by the registrant.
  • Children are required to comply with the same Handi-Transit policies as registered passengers.
  • Children MUST wear seat belts when traveling in Handi-Transit vehicles.
